They burned the NIV?

Shhh...Don't tell the folks at Biblica and Zondervan, but they've been working for Satan.

This according to the folks at the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, NC, which held a book burning on Halloween night and burned, among other things, the NIV translation of the Bible.

But the NIV was not the only translation used as firewood. Also on the pyre were the RSV, NKJV, TLB, NASB, ESV, NEV, NRSV, ASV, NWT, Good News for Modern Man, The Evidence Bible, The Message Bible, The Green Bible, "and etc."

Here's a link to their site: http://amazinggracebaptistchurchkjv.com/Download99.html Check it out and see how many of the satanic books you own. You'll be amazed!

While I love my NIV and would be hard pressed to part with it, I could definitely get into burning some John Shelby Spong, or watching the image of Joel Osteen's smile fade as the dust covers of his books crumple in the flames. I actually might roast marshmallows over that fire!

But seriously, their list of desirable combustibles is pretty amazing from the standpoint of Mockingbird mentors and heroes: George Carey? C.S. Lewis?

So my curiosity is piqued, and I hope you'll share: in considering this exhaustive list of so-called satanic books, how many of these books do you currently have in your home? My count is up to 11 at this point, and a few of those I probably should have burned already. Not because they're satanic, but because they were just awful to read!

What can you say? Judging by the number of wrongly spelled names and words and the number of grammatical errors on the website there, I'd say these folks have plenty of disregard for the English language itself.

I decided a long time ago that King James-Onlyism is a doctrine of those who want to "feel" religious. The KJV is, of course, a great work of literature, with its poetic rhythms and the rolling cadences of Elizabethen English. You find much the same thing in the reactionary Catholics who insist that their mass must be conducted in Latin only -- the sounds and rhythms make them "feel" religious.

Am I the only one who's noticed that whenever a church has the word "grace" in the church's name, grace somehow seems to be the one think they do not preach?

Yes, I've noticed that, Dan. Some churches overcompensate on things they know aren't there. I think in this case it would be applicable to "amazing" as well :)

The "flame throwers" are a congregation with the words "Amazing Grace" in their name?

"Amazing grace," indeed.

Ah. I should have read the thread first, I guess I'm not the only one who spotted the obvious irony.

Amazing!

Oh, man...click on the "and many more link" to be taken to their full list of heretics. In addition to CS Lewis and George Carey, it includes John Stott, J.I. Packer and R.C. Sproul.

My satanic book cound just doubled!

I surfed around the website, and I found the best quote on the "Got Issues" page:
"Richard Petty’s god is racing, not God Almighty. He teaches that is okay in life to cheat just don’t get caught doing it. Is Richard Petty your idol?"

Interesting, I'm convinced that many religious customs are just another form of tribalism (KJV-only, high/low church, traditional/contemporary music, etc)...ways of defining and justifying the significance of one's group. It gets a bit scary, however, when the movement becomes too insistent upon a fine distinction...one can almost smell the desperation.

Regarding the comments about "Grace" being in the name of the church but grace definately not being on the menu, I wonder what they would think of Judgment and Love? It would probably shoot right to the top of their satanic charts!

Sean and DZ, can we send them a copy?
